Hoofers Hooligans 2019
Dallas to Ontario
May 9-12, 2019

Hoofers Hooligans will once again ride from Dallas, TX to Ontario, CA. We ride with an emphasis on safe group travel, camaraderie, respect, and fun. This ride is a great way to “get your mind right” and ready for the RFTW Mission, as well as a chance to brush up on (loose) formation riding. We will ride in a staggered formation, but if anyone wishes to practice riding side-by-side, we can do that. We will, at times, ride a Missing Man Formation. Fuel stops have been planned for approximately every 120 miles or 2 hours. However, there are two sections that are 140 miles between fuel stops! If you cannot travel that far please let me know. We do NOT have a chase vehicle or Road Guards. To break up the monotony of interstate highway travel, we will take a few detours to see other parts of the country. We will also stop at several OPTIONAL Tour Of Honor sites, so that those riding the ToH can “collect” their rally stops. (Check out www.TourOfHonor.com.) Let me know if you are interested in visiting these sites with me.

On Day 1, we will gather at the International House Of Pancakes (IHOP) in Grand Prairie. Let’s start this trip with a full stomach! We will not leave until 09:00 to allow for DFW traffic to disperse a little bit. It is an easy day of traveling, so a slightly later start is fine. Our lunch-stop for the day is a highly rated “family style” restaurant in Sweetwater, Texas. (There are vegetarian options available.) After lunch, we will wind our way across some great Texas back roads on our way to our evening destination in Lamesa, Texas.

Day 2 is all about making some miles. The “twist” for this year is our new route. We will be leaving the highway for most of the day! We will be stopping at the Guadalupe National Park to view the highest point in Texas (at over 8,750 feet) and learn a little about the geology of far west-Texas. Lunch will be at another highly acclaimed stop in Cornudas, Texas. We will then make our way to our annual visit to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in El Paso. Our destination for the evening will be Deming, New Mexico. This will be our longest riding day, but should be very informative and entertaining.

On Day 3, we will leave the highway behind again and take a more scenic route. We will take our time winding through the mountains, arriving in Tempe/Phoenix in the mid-afternoon. In honor of “Mr Magic,” we will be stopping for some Mexican-style hamburgers! (Burgers made with fry-bread instead of buns. Yumm!) The American Legion Post 138 in Tempe, Arizona, has offered to feed us dinner again this year! This is a DONATED meal on Saturday night. You do NOT want to miss the “Seven o’clock toast!” This ceremony, and then the following fellowship, is one of the highlights of our trip.

Day 4 will have us on the road a little earlier than on the other days, so that we can beat the desert heat and arrive in Ontario by early afternoon. Be prepared for some strong winds as we cross the mountains and descend into the Los Angeles basin. We typically meet up with many other RFTW Riders in both Quartzsite and Coachella, so our numbers may grow.

If you are interested in joining the Hooligans, please let me know as soon as you can. I will need to get an approximate headcount to give to the people and organizations that are so graciously donating food for us. However, you MAY join at the last minute, and at any location. Just let me know when and where to expect you. We are happy to have all Riders come with us!
