McCrain's in Middle Earth
A travel dialogue of our adventures in New Zealand

In February 2004, Jim and Kathy McCrain began a five month oddessy in New Zealand. Kathy was transferred to Auckland for a temporary work assignment, and Jim followed her for moral support. (Isn't he just the greatest husband?) What follows is Jim's account of this adventure.

Winding Down (Just a little bit, though!)

July 26, 2004

The miles are starting to take a toll on Kathy and I. Neither of us has much energy right now, so we made this a short day. In fact, we decided to indulge and got ourselves a hotel room! Tonight, we will sleep in a BIG bed, in a room that is WARM, and eat REAL food! We will even watch movies and eat popcorn! What decadence!

Of course, before we did all of that, we STILL got in some site-seeing. We went to the town of Motueka, and then on to the start of the Abel Tasman Coastal Trail. This “tramp” is a four-day walk along the upper coastline of the South Island. It is considered to be one of the most scenic walks in New Zealand, and is a part of the “Great Walks” trail system. Remember, we were tired, so we looked, took a few pictures, and then left. Our pictures won’t do this area any justice, because we just simply didn’t put out any effort to do anything today. We may have paid a dear price in missing this scenery, but we will be better off for the rest of our trip. After all, we ARE getting older, and we need to slow down just a bit. (My 41st Birthday was just a few days ago!)
