McCrain's
in Middle Earth
A travel dialogue of our adventures
in New Zealand
In February 2004, Jim and Kathy McCrain
began a five month oddessy in New Zealand. Kathy was transferred to
Auckland for a temporary work assignment, and Jim followed her for moral
support. (Isn't he just the greatest husband?) What follows is Jim's
account of this adventure.
"...
And miles to go before we sleep."
July 23, 2004
Today
found us leaving the Queenstown/Wanaka region, and had us heading to
the west coast. To get there, we would travel along the Haast Pass route.
This route takes us across several mountain ranges, including
the “national
divide”
that separates the east and west. (Just like the “Continental
Divide in the United States.) We hadn’t planned to travel very
far today, and that was a good decision. The scenery is so unbelievably
spectacular that we didn’t make very good time! It seems that
we would just barely get started driving down the road, when we would
have to pull over and take another picture! Once again, “WOW!”
just doesn’t say enough! I hope these pictures will do.
