McCrain's in Middle Earth
A travel dialogue of our adventures in New Zealand

In February 2004, Jim and Kathy McCrain began a five month oddessy in New Zealand. Kathy was transferred to Auckland for a temporary work assignment, and Jim followed her for moral support. (Isn't he just the greatest husband?) What follows is Jim's account of this adventure.

The "Milford Sound" Experience!

July 20, 2004

Today we decided to take a cruise on the incredibly beautiful Milford Sound. This sound is actually a fiord, but don’t ask me to tell you the difference! All I know is that we had mountains rising directly out of the crystalline waters, soaring to heights of many thousands of feet directly over our heads. Of course, where you have sheer walls of stone and a temperate rainforest, you will also have incredible water falls! Kathy felt like she was in Heaven! I don’t know what was prettier; the water falls or the smiles on Kathy’s face! Either way, I was the real winner!

You may have noticed that I have been using quite a few superlatives over the last few days, and that a lot of my sentences are ending with an exclamation point! The reason for this is that this country is absolutely amazing! "WOW" just doesn’t say enough, but everything else falls far too short! We really need some new words to describe how beautiful and majestic this place is. In all my days and miles of travels, I have never encountered a land that makes you stop and appreciate sheer beauty so often. You really cannot drive for more than a few miles without someone in the vehicle saying “Wow! Look at that!” or “Did you see this?” Not even pictures tell the story adequately. Still, I hope you like these!
