McCrain's
in Middle Earth
A travel dialogue of our adventures
in New Zealand
In February 2004, Jim and Kathy McCrain
began a five month oddessy in New Zealand. Kathy was transferred to
Auckland for a temporary work assignment, and Jim followed her for moral
support. (Isn't he just the greatest husband?) What follows is Jim's
account of this adventure.
Happy
Birthday, Ben!
June 18,
2004
My
best-friend celebrated his 41st birthday today, so Kathy and I decided
to celebrate with him, even though we were 9,000 miles away! We went
to the
Auckland
Zoo! It is small, but very nice. They have everything from Penguins
to Meerkats, Giant Turtles to Lions. Kathy is very fond of otters. In
fact, they are her favorite animals. We were thrilled to find TWO enclosures
full
of them. I don't think we have taken as many pictures of one particular
animal in our lives! We were lucky enough to be there during feeding
time, and they were incredibly entertaining to watch. We were also
there when they fed the tigers. Seeing a giant cat jump over 10 feet
up into a tree to retrieve some food was amazing. And then it started
howling and growling! I can assure you that if I heard that sound in
the wilderness, I would lose a LOT of sleep!

It
was a great day for us, and I hope that Ben had as enjoyable a day as
we did. Happy Birthday, Ben!
