McCrain's
in Middle Earth
A travel dialogue of our adventures
in New Zealand
In February 2004, Jim and Kathy McCrain
began a five month oddessy in New Zealand. Kathy was transferred to
Auckland for a temporary work assignment, and Jim followed her for moral
support. (Isn't he just the greatest husband?) What follows is Jim's
account of this adventure.
SAILING!
June 7,
2004
We
went sailing today! Auckland is known as the "City of Sails"
so we HAD to go sailing. The only problem with this idea is that
I don't like water! Still, being the good sport that I am, I swallowed
my (very rational) fear of drowning and followed Kathy (very
timidly, I must admit) onto the boat. We sailed on an America's
Cup racing yacht! Once I got used to being on a boat that leans so far
over that the gunwales (sides) actually
dip under water, it was kind of fun! (Actually, I NEVER got used to
how much these things lean! Boats are designed to float ON TOP of
the water, not to lean over and have the sides dip under!) Anyway,
it was a lot of fun, and I have a huge respect for the sailors that
operate these boats. It is a lot of hard work, and requires an incredible
amount of skill.
When in Auckland,
I highly recommend this adventure!
