McCrain's
in Middle Earth
A travel dialogue of our adventures
in New Zealand
In February 2004, Jim and Kathy McCrain
began a five month oddessy in New Zealand. Kathy was transferred to
Auckland for a temporary work assignment, and Jim followed her for moral
support. (Isn't he just the greatest husband?) What follows is Jim's
account of this adventure.
Going South: On the way to Christchurch
March 29, 2004
I
am on my way to the South Island for a few weeks of fun in the mountains
of New Zealand! I have several "tramps" planned that should
expose me to a large and diverse cross-section of the New Zealand landscape.
But first, I have to fly to Christchurch. On the flight down, I got
my first good views of the lush New Zealand countryside, and some very
beautiful mountains. I can't wait to get on the ground again!
All
I know about Christchurch is that it is one of the three largest cities
in New Zealand. It is large enough to have all the "modern conveniences"
that we are accustomed too,
but it is small enough to feel "comfortable." It is a very
clean city, too. (Actually, New Zealand has reminded me a lot of Vancouver,
BC!) The center of the City is Cathedral Square. This
place is a riot! From the magnificent church in the center of the square,
there is a 360 degree view of non-stop fun! How about a life-size chess
match? Or super-sized
sculptures?
There is even a place where locals can go and publicly "preach
the truth." (It is an open forum for public debate. On my first
day there, the "speaker" was dressed as a Wizard and talked
about everything from "being on the public dole" to "how
to keep a Woman happy." (I am sure he had no clue what he was talking
about. His ideas would have gotten him slapped by ALL the women I know!)
I
stayed at a "backpacker" called "Charlie B's." A
backpacker is similar to a hostel. They offer a cheap, clean
bed with a shower. There are also kitchen and laundry facilities, movies,
and a library. New Zealand is teaming with "backpackers."
They are located all over the country, and are so numerous that you
rarely have to make a reservation. But speaking of that, be very carefully
if you DO make a reservation. "Charlie B's" tried to charge
me for two extra nights when I simply ASKED if they had room. I may
still have to fight them with my credit card company! I recommend that
people stay at some of the other, smaller backpackers to really enjoy
their stay here. "Coker's Backpacker" was
VERY nice and friendly! They will get my repeat business!!
Christchurch has plenty of public transportation
and places to eat, not to mention a LOT of cultural activities. Be sure
to check out the botanical gardens and the Antarctic Research Center!
But most importantly, be
sure to check out ALL of Christchurch!
