McCrain's
in Middle Earth
A travel dialogue of our adventures
in New Zealand
In February 2004, Jim and Kathy McCrain
began a five month oddessy in New Zealand. Kathy was transferred to
Auckland for a temporary work assignment, and Jim followed her for moral
support. (Isn't he just the greatest husband?) What follows is Jim's
account of this adventure.
March 15: Getting Connected
I
have spent the better part of the last two days trying to "get
connected" with the internet. It seems that New Zealand is a very
progressive and modern city. That is, if you consider modern to be the
1990's! Actually, that is a very unfair statement, and one that puts
me into the "bastard American" category that I hate so much.
I have become accustomed to instant internet access, and I expect the
communication infrastructure of all countries to be equal to that of
Americas. It isn't, and I need to learn to be patient! This will be
a sore trial for me! My motto is: "Instant gratification takes
too long!" Don't worry, I'll get over it!
I
didn't do much exploring today. I need a few days to rest my foot and
get oriented to my new surroundings. "Rest my foot?" Oh yeah,
I forgot to mention that I broke a toe on my left foot a few days before
leaving home. I was in San Antonio for "High Holy Days at The Alamo"
and tripped, jabbing my toe into a toilet. It wasn't until late that
evening, after having walked all day on it, that I realized that the
toe was, in fact, broken. (It was pointing the wrong direction. That,
and the fact that it was the wrong color was my first clue!) So, I grabbed
the end of it, pulled it back into place, and cried like a baby. It
really hurts to set your own broken
bones!
But, it started feeling better immediately, and will continue to heal.
(As long as I will get off of it and let it!) So, I don't plan to do
a LOT of walking for the next couple of days.
Once I get "back on my feet"
I will make my way back to Auckland City and "get on" with
the Adventure. Until then, I will sit back, drink a cola, and enjoy
a "tan slice" for a snack. Don't even ask! I can't really
describe it. (It's kind of like a cookie, but not really.) I'll send
out for some 'roo strip pizza this evening, and then watch some really
horrid "telly" with Kathy.
Until next time, enjoy the nice sunset!
